REALITY’S TRUE SELF

I never quite understand why people are constantly telling us to ‘just be yourself’. No one is actually interested in who you are; when you go for that dream job interview you are never just yourself. You aim to be who they want you to be. They have this perception of their ideal candidate and if you can become that person then there’s no real reason to be yourself. We are constantly trying to be the person someone else wants us to be and if we are ever ourselves for just one moment, we are afraid we are changing or developing bad habits. Do we even know our true selves? Are we constantly trying to be that other person that we have completely lost track of whom we really are? But where would we get in life if we stayed true to ourselves. I mean who wants to be honest and find content in true happiness when we can score that perfect job and act the role of that perfect employee so friends, family and the rest of the world can respect you for the position you hold in society, won’t that make you happy? Or marry that perfect man and continue being that person you were when you made him fall for you, because will he still love you if you suddenly relax and start showing your true self?

We are a society so lost in social expectations that we are afraid of letting go of our mask and living our lives. To cut off connections, influences and societal pressures for a short period of time and take a moment to think about who you are and what you want in life is feared by most because the reality is that it may be different to the life they’re living.
